The Woodwose of St Mawgan - Pagan Sculpture

This piece is my invocation of the ancient wild man, the Woodwose as he might rise from the damp myth-soaked woods of St Mawgan. Inspired by the story I read on the Dark Cornwall website. I imagined him not as monster, but as memory. A figure grown from moss and time, tangled in roots and warnings.

I used found wood that I collected from my camping excursion to Boscastle in 2023. For me, using items from magical locations imbibes that sculpture with the mystery I thrive on.

His limbs are half-claimed by the forest. Or is he rising from the woodland floor itself? I sculpted him as a guardian of the land, of the old ways, of the things we try to forget but that still breathe beneath the surface.

For me, The Woodwose is a kind of mirror. A reminder that the wild never truly leaves us it waits, just beneath our skin.
